Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. Feminist Frequency is a site that hosts videos and commentaries analysing portrayals female characters in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency is a non-for profit educational site that explores female representations in popular stories of culture - was created and directed by Sarkeesian. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is her main focus. However, Sarkeesian also explores the issue of specifically targeted harassment online against women and for other groups which are excluded. Sarkeesian, who has a Master's in Political and Social Thinking from York University, is a sought after public speaking. She has spoken at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. While a student at university, Sarkeesian became fascinated by the issue of gender identity and women's rights from a young age. A woman with ambitions to start a web-series examining the gender representation of video games was targeted in the internet campaign. She was not deterred by the assault, the fact is that it only bolstered her desire to become an expert on media and feminism. She is a recipient of numerous awards for her contribution to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winning journalist. She also serves as the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organisation that studies pop culture depictions of women.
